What We Know
“Black babies are more likely to die, and also far more likely to be born prematurely, setting the stage for health issues that could follow them through their lives……”
By Kat Stafford: Published May 23, 2023 This story is part one of an AP series examining the health disparities experienced by Black Americans across a lifetime.
According to the CDC, In 2019, infant mortality rates by race and ethnicity, based on 1,000 live births, were as follows:
Non-Hispanic Black: 10.6
Non-Hispanic Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander: 8.2
Non-Hispanic American Indian/Alaska Native: 7.9
Hispanic: 5.0
Non-Hispanic white: 4.5
Non-Hispanic Asian: 3.4

Working Together
Support Community Doulas
Today, medical facilities tend to be short-staffed and cost-conscious, focusing on the bottom line, not positive outcomes for their patients. A doula can help you have a more rewarding childbirth experience. Doulas provide support and advocate for the mother’s wishes, their main goal is to ensure that families feel empowered and in control throughout the birthing process.
A doula’s role is not to replace medical professionals but to work alongside them to create a safe and fulfilling birth experience for the mother and her family. For new parents, doulas help ease the transition into motherhood; assist with breastfeeding, provide education on parenting skills, and valuable advice on self-care for the mother.
Benefits of a Doula-Supported Birth
- Lowers the chance of getting a C-Section
- Lowers epidural usage
- Lowers artificial induction
- Shortens Labor
- Lowers use of forceps and vacuum extractors
- Lowers the chance of infection
- Initiates breastfeeding
- Lowers incidence of postpartum depression
- Enhances good parenting skills
- Reduces stress for new and inexperienced parents

Doulas Improve Birth Outcomes For Low-Income Women Your Donation Will Help
Studies by the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Journal of Midwifery & Women’s Health (JMWH), the American Journal of Public Health (AJPH), and several authoritative public health and research organizations consistently show that doulas can have a significant impact on birth outcomes for low-income women. The data shows that low-income women who had a doula were 25% less likely to have a cesarean section, 50% less likely to have an epidural, and 60% less likely to report feeling depressed after childbirth.
Did you know that the cost of a doula is typically less than the cost of a single day in the hospital? Your donation can help to make doula care affordable for low-income women. Whether it is providing formula, diapers, or transportation, your gift will create better outcomes for both mother and baby in disadvantaged households.
Please consider making a donation today to help us support low-income women and their families. Your gift will make a difference in the lives of those who are most in need.
